The newly-billionaire platform Instagram launches IGTV, its own video space

Benefiting from its billion users, Instagram gets to an explosive field : the long-format video.

On Wednesday, Instagram reached a new level : the social network has now one billion users and joins its Menlo Park mates in the big leagues, such as Facebook, Messenger ou WhatsApp.

Benefiting from this figure, the successful application launched IGTV, a new app for watching long-form, vertical videos.

If the concept of vertical video may be surprising, Instagram hereby offers the perfect format for smartphones, just as Snapchat originally did.

It was already possible to publish vertical videos on Instagram thanks to the 2016 Stories update, but the social network goes further this year and blasts video time limit. Indeed, IGTV videos can last up to ten minutes for average users and up to one hour for certified accounts.

It is no longer a matter of spontaneous videos as are Stories. Here, users can’t directly film themselves on the application, but only upload edited videos, which thus promises thorough contents, similar to YouTube’s. IGTV is a clearly-announced offensive against YouTube success, in order to attract contents creators, disappointed by the more and more constraining algorithms of Google’s video platform.

Notice to all Instagram users, this functionality is already available. Once the last update of the mobile app is downloaded, users are ready to go. They can also directly download the IGTV app available on Android and IOS.
